Chapter Sixteen

Year: Reign of Tharos 5

Planet: Bardawulf

System: Ursuna

My arms were coated in blood. I stared down, horrified at the stickiness of it. A quick inventory of my own body made my panic rise. I wasn’t cut open anywhere. If this wasn’t my blood then whose—

Someone screamed.

I whipped my head up, searching for who the sound belonged to. Then I blinked at the sight before me. Shock had muted everything—even sound. Or maybe that had been the explosion I’d heard just before the portal had sucked us away. Like a wind tunnel or a soundproof room, I’d arrived back on the soft patch of grass of Bardawulf in a vacuum.

The moment I looked up, everything rushed back in at once.

A crowd had gathered, filling the glade where we’d landed—and not a small one. At least fifty wolves and Zorovians were scattered around the now-quiet tree. More were still arriving from the direction of town. Several carried bags of medical supplies while others called out the names of their loved ones, searching through the throng with growing panic.

My own panic disoriented me. I tried to remember the last thing I’d seen and heard on the other side. Suddenly, the memory of my friends crashed back in, and I looked around again, this time searching for Xander or Kent or Jalene. Even Dominik.

But that’s not who I saw now, cutting a rough path through the crowd.

Gregory’s eyes were wide, and his mouth open as he barreled straight for me, shoving people out of his way as he hurried past them. He screamed, and I realized it was the same scream I’d heard a second ago. I flinched as he came at me, bracing myself for some sort of assault, but at the last minute he brushed past me and dropped to the ground, hovering over a figure lying motionless beside me.

Kent.

He was unconscious and coated in blood. Even through the blood, I could see the black stain on his chest, now oozing with a dark liquid and slowly spreading across his skin.

I stared at the sight of him there, horrified to realize the blood on my arms was his. My heart lurched with guilt and agony. My hands shook as I reached for Kent, but his father whirled, eyes blazing with unrestrained rage. “Get away from him!”

“You have to put pressure,” I began, gesturing to an open wound on Kent’s abdomen that was leaking a lazy but steady stream of crimson liquid.

“I’ve got it,” Peter said, swooping in from behind me with a medical bag in his hand as he wedged himself between Kent’s body and mine.

Peter’s distraction was enough to capture Gregory’s attention, and he turned away, snapping questions as Peter began treating Kent’s wound.

I struggled to sit up, blinking against the wave of dizziness as I rose to my elbows. Then Xander was there, helping me ease forward.

“Shit, I didn’t realize you were awake. Slowly now. Where are you hurt?” he asked.

“I…” I licked my lips, noting the ache in my chest that seemed to go all the way to my bones.
